When the AVATAR re-release hits theaters on August 27 get ready for 9 new minutes of never-before-seen footage of life on Pandora. Although Cameron originally planned 8 minutes, the final cut includes 9. One of the deleted scenes includes Tsu-tey’s death: “There’s a pretty powerful emotional scene at the end which is Tsu’tey’s death … which happens off-camera in the original release. [In the original film] he kind of falls off the back of the shuttle and that’s the last that you see of him but here we follow through. We have this emotional scene with Jake [Sully] and Neytiri and some other Na’vi that gather around him in the forest,” Cameron said. Cameron also says the additional AVATAR scenes include four major moments, each a few minutes long that center on when the helicopter first lands in the Pandora rainforest. There’s also a new creature that turns up: the Sturmbeest. The director also said the scenes that were reinstated in the re-release version are big on non-top action.

Cameron also revealed that he’s talked to the studio about shooting Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 sequels back-to-back. “We’re actually talking about [doing 2 and 3] back to back. That’s not a decision yet but that’s something that makes a lot of sense given the nature of these productions because we can bank all the capture and go back and do cameras over a period of time… cause the way these sort of back to back productions fall apart is you’re trying to do two live-action films back to back and you’re working on it for like a year and a half shooting. Everybody’s dead- it’s not humanly possible. But this type of film it absolutely would work.”

Are you excited about the new scenes that Cameron describes? Or were you hoping for something different?

With only one week left until AVATAR DVD release, Avatar movie fans can barely wait to get their hands on a official record of the highest-grossing film of all time.   Thursday April 22nd may be the official date, but Avatar is already topping Amazon’s bestsellers list with both the Blu-ray and DVD versions.

In addition to physical discs, people will be able to instantly watch Avatar through Amazon Video on Demand starting at Midnight PST on Thursday, meaning true fans can be the first of their friends to brag about watching the film at the exact minute of release.  Of course, people can continue to pre-order and have the Blu-ray or DVD delivered to them the day it comes out as well.

AVATAR on DVD AVATAR will be released for DVD and Blu-ray on April 22. Better still, producer Jon Landau says it will have no trailers or anything else so as to save room for the best possible audio and video. Since April 22 is Earth Day, Landau and director James Cameron will kick off a tie-in environmental campaign at a press conference on March 23.

Expect to pay $30 for the DVD and $40 for the Blu-ray, with a full-featured, multi-disc Blu-ray to come in November while a 3D release lurks in the distant future. (And yes, Amazon is already taking pre-orders.) But won’t this hurt the theatrical re-release? Not necessarily, because that version will have new footage, while the DVD will only feature the movie as originally released.

With no extra footage planned, will you still get the 2D DVD or wait for 3D and extras?

Bioluminescence AVATAR was chased from digital and IMAX 3D screens when Alice in Wonderland opened on March 5, but Alice won’t hog those screens forever. That leaves James Cameron Co. free to re-release AVATAR with previously unseen footage, probably this fall. IMAX theater owners should be happy to show a guaranteed hit like the re-release, particularly since Cameron to have 40 minutes of unseen footage and could add 10 minutes to the current run time, possibly including Jake enduring a Na’vi trial and Tsu’tey getting drunk (The rest of the 30 minutes will have to wait until the DVD). With any luck, the re-release could stay in theaters until Titanic 3D is released in 2012.

Will you see AVATAR again in the theaters in the Fall?

Avatar 3D Blu-ray DVD

The AVATAR script reveals some background about the AVATAR world including sex, drugs and suicide. But lots happens before the movie’s events take place and producer Jon Landau says James Cameron wants to write a prequel novel: Sigourney teaching at the schoolhouse. Jake on Earth, and his back-story and how he came here, and Tommy, Jake’s brother. The possibilities are endless.
Avatar 3D  Cameron
Cameron could flesh out the Na’vi beyond the movie’s noble redskin stereotypes and even show something besides evil white guys and noble blue guys, but could just as easily blast right-wing critics. Or explain how unobtainium really got its name.
Avatar 3D Blu-ray DVD Na’vi character
Or write himself in as a Na’vi character. The good news: Cameron hopes to have the book done by the end of the year.
What questions about life before AVATAR would you like to see answered in the prequel?

According to News Corp. chairman and CEO (who owns Fox that financed Avatar), Rupert Murdoch, the Avatar DVD will be in stores sometime before June 30. He did’nt mention anything about Blu-Ray but I assume a Blu-Ray version will be released at the same time as the DVD. I also assume that he in fact means a Blu-Ray release (not DVD) when he talks about 3D versions of Avatar.

However, we will not get the 3D release just yet, that we will have to wait an unspecified extra time to get our hands on.

There is also talk about the upcoming Avatar sequel and that they are in “very early talks about it.” Director James Cameron “has ideas” for a sequel, he said, adding: “We will be pushing for one.”

NEW YORK — News Corp. is in very early talks with James Cameron about a possible “Avatar” sequel.

Asked about potential “Avatar” sequels, chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch said on his quarterly earnings call Tuesday that the conglomerate is in “very early talks about it.” Director James Cameron “has ideas” for a sequel, he said, adding: “We will be pushing for one.”

But he cautioned analysts not to “hold your breath for an early one” in a possible reference to Cameron projects often taking a long time to come to fruition.

News Corp. deputy chairman, president and COO Chase Carey interjected that both sides want to make another movie. “We certainly both intend to have one,” he said.

The executives said financing of a sequel like of any movies these days would be key as News Corp. likes to lay off risk, especially since Cameron films tend to go over budget. But given the success of “Avatar,” financing details could come together.

Management also said 60% or more of the profit from “Avatar” will come in over the next two quarters, adding the firm will continue its theater run as the boxoffice goes well, with a DVD release also planned soon after the theatrical run. A DVD release date hasn’t been announced so far.

Pushed further on details about the DVD plans for “Avatar,” Murdoch said it will be released during his company’s current fiscal year, which ends June 30. But he also highlighted that it won’t be a 3D DVD release as that technology isn’t developed enough yet. But Carey added there could be a 3D “Avatar” DVD release further “down the road” when the technology is ready.

AVATAR grabbed nine Oscar nominations, including best picture (even odds on that one), best art direction, best sound editing, best sound mixing and, of course, best visual effects.
James Cameron’s up for best director (a 3-to-1 shot?) while James Horner got a nod for best original score and Mauro Fiore’s up for a best-cinematography award (no surprise: his colleagues dig him too). James Cameron may also share best-film-editing honors with Stephen Rivkin and John Refoua.
Avatar 3D DVD nine nominations
Just one other movie garnered nine nominations: The Hurt Locker, directed by James Cameron’s ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow. What are the odds a divorced couple would be competing for Hollywood’s top prize? Does the Academy split the difference and give AVATAR best picture and Hurt Locker best director?
The big disappointment: In spite of extensive support from fans, none of the actors of Avatar were recognized for their contributions this year. Still, there’s hope that the popularity of Avatar, its numerous awards, the avid support of its director, and the scrutiny of performance capture will lead to nominations for Avatar’s sequels.
Avatar 3D DVD disappointed
Are you disappointed that Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) and Sam Worthington (Jake) didn’t get best actor recognition by the Oscars?

I’ve been getting many questions concerning the upcoming release for this Avatar DVD and Blu-ray this past weeks.
Cameron has said that he anticipates the film to arrive on DVD and Blu-ray sometime June-August, but doesn’t anticipate a 3D variation for this film to become released promptly.
He mentioned this in December, prior to he knew what level of success Avatar would have, so possibly it’s more likely that we get the DVD and Blu-ray release somewhere available September-November since Avatar however performs strong on the Box Office.
Likely the initial Blu-ray release of Avatar won’t be in 3-D and then a subsequent release is going to be in 3-D. That’s my guess right now. So we will possibly put out a disk, you know, in six or eight months, let’s call it six months, and then right after that we will have a 3-D disc when you can find adequate sets available.
In regards to any special content, Cameron revealed that you can find about 10 to 12 minutes of footage that may be incorporated within the residence video release either as deleted scenes or as part of an extended edition. 1 scene in particular focuses on Worthington’s character Jake Sully in his Avatar form, hunting a Sturmbeest — which is no longer seen within the movie.
MTV: Is there a sequence or two that one could describe for me that possibly will make it — regardless of whether it’s a director’s cut or an expanded edition — on DVD?
Cameron: …It’s a creature you no longer see within the movie,” Cameron explained. “[Sully] has to learn how to hunt through the air and do this incredibly brave issue, and then following the hunt they’ve this big festival and they dance and there’s a drunk scene with [Na'vi member] Tsu’tey, which can be Laz Alonso’s character, which is definitely quite damn funny.
