The Fusion 3-D camera system was co-developed by James Cameron and and Vince Pace. The rig uses two Sony HDCF950 HD cameras to create stereoscopic 3-D. Cameron first used the system on his 2003 IMAX film Ghosts of the Abyss.

It has since been used by Robert Rodriguez on Spy Kids 3-D and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, and most recently on Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

But I’m not exactly sure what improvements Cameron made to the rig over the last five years.

There is some advance clips and interviews from Avatar movie team! It is taken a decade and a half for James Cameron to bring science fiction Avatar to the blue cinema screen (in 3-D IMAX ), but now that cinema technology has caught up with his imagination, he is leading an all-star action-packed cast into the blue jungles of a alien world called Pandora to meet his nice blue-skinned aliens.

Using specialy made performance capture rigs on a scale never before attempted, Avatar seems stunning so far and there is a lot of talk about the new exclusive technology and the visuals, but as is the case in any movie, the real satisfaction for the audience lies on that 15-year old paper that Avatar was written on. Because that has to be great for Avatar to really knock it out of the park.

We will soon find out, but with Cameron as story writer and movie producer, we’ve definitely got our hopes extreamly high!
