AVATAR is still number four in box-office sales, but James Cameron tells MTV that there’ll be three AVATAR DVDs: a 2-D version slated for a June 30 release, then a special edition and a 3-D Blu-ray DVD. (He also told the Wall Street Journal the release would happen on Earth Day—April 22; stay tuned for definitive release dates.) Luckily, Samsung, Sony and others will start selling 3-D TVs ahead of any AVATAR 3-D edition.
AVATAR 3-D edition
So will viewers shell out for the bare-bones 2-D version when a special edition and a 3-D release are coming soon? And which edition will have alien sex scenes? What we do know is that even the 2-D release of the DVD will have plenty of never-before-seen footage.
Will you get the first release or wait for the full 3-D version?
Avatar 3D Blu-ray DVD
The AVATAR script reveals some background about the AVATAR world including sex, drugs and suicide. But lots happens before the movie’s events take place and producer Jon Landau says James Cameron wants to write a prequel novel: Sigourney teaching at the schoolhouse. Jake on Earth, and his back-story and how he came here, and Tommy, Jake’s brother. The possibilities are endless. Cameron could flesh out the Na’vi beyond the movie’s noble redskin stereotypes and even show something besides evil white guys and noble blue guys, but could just as easily blast right-wing critics. Or explain how unobtainium really got its name. Or write himself in as a Na’vi character. The good news: Cameron hopes to have the book done by the end of the year.
What questions about life before AVATAR would you like to see answered in the prequel?

So the day has finally arrived, Avatar passed Titanic at the North American Box Office all time list. This is a feat that was thought almost impossible just a few months ago, but Avatar ignores all the rules that normally apply at the Box Office.
Avatar 3D Blu-ray
Avatar still tops the daily and weekly Box Office as well, so the final tally for Avatar is still to be seen. Avatar just got 9 Oscar nominations, that should give Avatar another boost. If Avatar wins some Oscars (which it will), that will be another boost. Just the fact that it passed Titanic will be a boost in itself.
Avatar 3D Blu-ray Conclusion
Conclusion - Avatar still have a lot of earning power left. $700+ million at the North American Box Office wouldn’t surprise me.

According to News Corp. chairman and CEO (who owns Fox that financed Avatar), Rupert Murdoch, the Avatar DVD will be in stores sometime before June 30. He did’nt mention anything about Blu-Ray but I assume a Blu-Ray version will be released at the same time as the DVD. I also assume that he in fact means a Blu-Ray release (not DVD) when he talks about 3D versions of Avatar.
However, we will not get the 3D release just yet, that we will have to wait an unspecified extra time to get our hands on.
There is also talk about the upcoming Avatar sequel and that they are in “very early talks about it.” Director James Cameron “has ideas” for a sequel, he said, adding: “We will be pushing for one.”
NEW YORK — News Corp. is in very early talks with James Cameron about a possible “Avatar” sequel.
Asked about potential “Avatar” sequels, chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch said on his quarterly earnings call Tuesday that the conglomerate is in “very early talks about it.” Director James Cameron “has ideas” for a sequel, he said, adding: “We will be pushing for one.”
But he cautioned analysts not to “hold your breath for an early one” in a possible reference to Cameron projects often taking a long time to come to fruition.
News Corp. deputy chairman, president and COO Chase Carey interjected that both sides want to make another movie. “We certainly both intend to have one,” he said.
The executives said financing of a sequel like of any movies these days would be key as News Corp. likes to lay off risk, especially since Cameron films tend to go over budget. But given the success of “Avatar,” financing details could come together.
Management also said 60% or more of the profit from “Avatar” will come in over the next two quarters, adding the firm will continue its theater run as the boxoffice goes well, with a DVD release also planned soon after the theatrical run. A DVD release date hasn’t been announced so far.
Pushed further on details about the DVD plans for “Avatar,” Murdoch said it will be released during his company’s current fiscal year, which ends June 30. But he also highlighted that it won’t be a 3D DVD release as that technology isn’t developed enough yet. But Carey added there could be a 3D “Avatar” DVD release further “down the road” when the technology is ready.
AVATAR grabbed nine Oscar nominations, including best picture (even odds on that one), best art direction, best sound editing, best sound mixing and, of course, best visual effects. James Cameron’s up for best director (a 3-to-1 shot?) while James Horner got a nod for best original score and Mauro Fiore’s up for a best-cinematography award (no surprise: his colleagues dig him too). James Cameron may also share best-film-editing honors with Stephen Rivkin and John Refoua.
The Hurt Locker grabbed nine Oscar nominations
Just one other movie garnered nine nominations: The Hurt Locker, directed by James Cameron’s ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow. What are the odds a divorced couple would be competing for Hollywood’s top prize? Does the Academy split the difference and give AVATAR best picture and Hurt Locker best director?
Avatar DVD The big disappointment
The big disappointment: In spite of extensive support from fans, none of the actors of Avatar were recognized for their contributions this year. Still, there’s hope that the popularity of Avatar, its numerous awards, the avid support of its director, and the scrutiny of performance capture will lead to nominations for Avatar’s sequels.
Avatar DVD, what about You?
Are you disappointed that Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) and Sam Worthington (Jake) didn’t get best actor recognition by the Oscars?
